In Jerusalem there have been repeated protests against the running of a parking lot on the Sabbath (Saturday). This parking lot is owned by the municipality and the Jews that are against it are particularly ultra-orthodox. This has been no peaceful battle; the protesters have been very violent against police forces. As the police officers attempt to stop the protesters from blocking traffic, they have been attacked with water bags and yelled at. The police force most likely would have aggravated the protesters more by working on the Sabbath as well.
These protests seem to be a very extreme measure for such a matter, but apparently most other work places shut down for the Sabbath. Overall, this seems like a small part of the larger picture. As these ultra-orthodox Jews make up one-third of Jerusalem’s population, they are a huge force in the struggle to gain back Jerusalem. There have been many groups that claim Jerusalem as Holy Land and Orthodox Jews are among them. This issue could be a small way of gaining back that power.
