RLST311: 100 Lashes

This story is about an arson case to a magazine office, which produced a satirical cartoon of Mohammed. This cartoon was featured on the cover of the magazine showing Mohammed saying, “100 lashes if you’re not dying of laughter”. According to the magazine, the cartoon did not mean to offend Islamic beliefs in any way. Fire was set to the office in the morning that the specific magazine was to publish. Most likely the criminals did not read the magazine, but the cover was enough for them to respond in this violent manner.

This act would have increased tension between the French government and Muslims living in France. Muslims have already felt pressure from the government as veils have been banned entirely in the country. In some cases, such as this one, Muslims have acted out against forces they have considered oppressive. In France’s case, the banning of veils was for a manner of security and an effort to give women dignity in society. Legislation such as this has been passed in many countries, such as Belgium.

Has this response from Muslim people gone too far? When speaking on the event, the mayor of Paris said that it was “absolutely unacceptable”. Most people would agree with him as well—burning down a building is no way to respond to a religious attack.
